Program Open Space (POS) - Local

Maryland DNR LogoThe Program Open Space - Local (POS Local) initiative, established in 1969 in response to the rapid loss of open spaces in Maryland, has become a vital program for preserving public lands across the state. Funded by a 0.5% State property transfer tax, POS Local supports local municipalities in developing recreational lands and facilities, from parks and trails to playgrounds and athletic fields.

Emphasizing long-term sustainability and community benefits, the program has played a key role in providing outdoor recreation opportunities and preserving natural resources for over five decades. With its funding rooted in real estate transactions, POS Local collaboratively works with local governments, aligning projects with the Land, Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP) to meet community needs. This initiative not only underscores Frederick County's commitment to environmental stewardship and recreational inclusivity but also enhances the quality of life for residents, ensuring the preservation of Maryland's natural beauty and recreational facilities for future generations.
